Project Description

To get to the new world, we need a map. Our bodies are a container for what we believe in politically as well as what we believe in spiritually.  Choreography MAPPING ancient worlds more complete than ours, gifts us with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained. The core of the initiative is original movement, which takes cues from a wide range of dance impulses including vernacular, hip hop, modern and hieroglyphs. MAPPING produces meaningful togetherness in places in peril, its a culture of being together, and generates knowledge that is not fixed and always open for newcomers. In 2009, our platform launched with a series of MAPPING in the historic neighborhoods of Reynoldstown, and Cabbagetown, the first textile processing mill built in the South, who’s workforce consisted of poor whites from the Appalachian region. MAPPING a now demolished Zero Mile Post, and Interloching Tower, two of the last architectural sites of Historic Atlanta’s original “Terminus” station, brought together GSU’s Anthropology School, activists ThreadATL, and longtime glo collaborator Big Rube, original Dugeon Family member and OutKast narrator. 2019 included MAPPING debuts in Brooklyn and Jersey City in collaboration with feminist bookstore WORD, BAM Fischer, and Nimbus Dance.
